BONDING WITH YOUR SUGAR GLIDERS
Bonding with sugar gliders takes patience, consistency, and gentle handling. They are prey animals by nature, so it can take time for them to trust you.
Here’s a breakdown to help you build a strong bond:
STEPS FOR BONDING WITH YOUR SUGAR GLIDER.
1. Give Them Time to Adjust.
When you first bring them home, let them settle into their new environment. Keep their cage in a quiet but not isolated area.
2. Bonding Pouch.
Carry your gliders in a bonding pouch (a soft, zippered pouch with air holes) for a few hours each day. This helps them get used to your smell, sound, and movement.
3. Use Treats.
Offer small treats like yogurt drops, mealworms, or tiny fruit pieces from your hand. Let them come to you instead of forcing interaction.
4. Talk to Them.
Use a calm, soft voice when near their cage or holding them. Over time, they’ll recognize and be comforted by your voice.
5. Hand Feeding & Scent Association.
Rub a piece of fleece with your scent and place it in their sleeping pouch. Hand-feed treats so they associate your presence with positive experiences.
6. Playtime Outside the Cage.
Let them play in a safe, glider-proofed room or tent. Sit quietly and let them climb on you at their own pace.
7. Consistency.
Bonding is not instant. It may take weeks to months. Daily interaction is key.
⏳ Signs of Progress.
Less crabbing (the loud, cranky noise they make). They willingly climb on you. They sleep in a pouch you are holding. They come to the front of the cage when you approach.
⚠️ Things to Avoid.
Forcing them out of their pouch. Loud noises or sudden movements. Strong perfumes or scents (they rely heavily on smell). Handling when they’re very sleepy (they may nip).
✨ Bonding with sugar gliders is all about trust and patience. Once they bond with you, they’ll want to be with you constantly.
